WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS OF THE CHURCH

On Prayer

"Prayer is turning the mind and thought toward God. To pray means to stand before God with the mind, mentally to gaze unswervingly at Him, and to converse with Him in referent fear and hope. (St. Dimitri of Rostov - 1651-1709)

"Our spirit should be quick to reach out toward God, not only when it is engaged in meditation: at other times, also, when it is carrying out its duties, caring for the needy, performing works of charity, giving generously in the service to others, our spirit should long for God and call Him to mind, so that these works may be seasoned with the salt of God's love, and so make a palatable offering to the God of the universe. Through the whole of our lives, we may enjoy the benefit that comes from prayer if we devote a great deal of time to it." (St. John Chrysostom - 347-407)

"The Lord has become everything for you, and you must become everything for the Lord." St. John of Kronstadt - 1829-1908)

"How easy it is to say, "My Lord Jesus, have mercy on me! I bless Thee, my Lord Jesus; help me!" (St. Macarius of Egypt - 350)
